Purple Broccoli Theatre has an energetic, creative and inclusive approach to children’s theatre. Our own unique style incorporates physical theatre, innovative storytelling, madcap humour and original musical compositions. Our inspiration comes from the natural world and folk tales, from children and their daily lives and popular culture, and from the desire to deepen children's connection to nature. Since our inception we have mounted and toured productions to schools, after school clubs and theatres, as well as outdoor locations such as gardens, green spaces and green fairs and festivals. We pride ourselves on productions that look fabulous and that can be adapted to suit almost any environment, inside and outside. Our sets are minimal and simple, yet can beautifully evoke an atmosphere.

Giants & Saplings - Three tree tales

A collection of stories from different cultures to reflect the multicultural community we live in and to comment on our common interest in trees and the natural world.

Tortoises Dream. An African folktale. A tortoise longs to find the tree of his dreams, a tree that produces every imaginable fruit and even some grains. It is easy to find as long as you can remember its name and do not look behind you on the way.

The People who Hugged the Trees. Adapted from a true story of how a community in India protected the precious trees that made their lives on the edge of a desert possible.

The Green Ladies of One Tree Hill. A traditional English folktale. Three brothers, each of them a farmer, with very different attitudes to the natural forces on which their livelihoods depend. This story conveys a real sense of the trees being living beings, worthy of respect and of the consequences we face if we work against nature.

Toadstone

Contemporary theatre for children.

Skip ye merrily down into the dell, where the Hawthorn, Elder and great Oak dwell……

Based on an English folk tale, 'Toadstone' takes us deep into the heart of an ancient forest where all the secrets of the earth are held within a magical jewel. In the wrong hands it's power could be devastating. And the wrong hands come seeking......

And beneath the tree there is a Toad, and in it's head a fabulous jewel.....

Created for performance in the gardens of the Horniman Museum in the summer of 2005, Purple Broccoli's Toadstone is a beautiful and moving piece of theatre for all ages. It takes us on a journey through the depths of the forest to the mountain peaks, from destructive ignorance to the heights of love and awakening.

'The message, costumes, music, use of the trees and nature were excellent! The actors were wonderful.... I loved the ride in on the bike of the witch.'
- Horniman Museum Gardens

With great joy and humour the message of 'Toadstone' is shared through highly visual/physical theatre, original songs and a large sprinkling of magic!

Find a stone in the shape of a toad, make a wish. What will it be?......

'The Purple Broccoli Theatre production of Toadstone which my family saw at the Horniman Gardens, was so good my children insisted we returned for a second visit. Beautiful to watch, educational and well produced. We took a picnic on the second visit and it was one of the best days of our summer.' - Parent, SE23

Initially Funded by the Local Network Fund and with support from the Horniman Museum Gardens. Can adapt to be site specific to your outdoor location.
